A series of computers of Pemex - a state-owned oil and gas company of Mexico, appeared messages asking for nearly $ 5 million in ransom towards websites related to the Doppel Paymer malware.

Hackers demand a ransom in Bitcoin

Mexico's national oil and gas corporation Pemex said it had recently suffered a cyberattack and was asked for $ 5 million in ransom in Bitcoin (BTC).

According to Pemex employees, the group discovered the cyberattack on November 10. The case forced the company to disconnect from the network, freeze many systems, including payment systems. Pemex computers all appeared a ransom message directed to a website associated with the DoppelPaymer malware.

This site has asked Pemex to pay 565 Bitcoin, which equates to nearly $ 5 million at current rates. Also set a 48-hour deadline for the company to work with a list of emails to contact.

The hackers claimed Pemex had missed the deadline to reduce the ransom, emphasizing "there is still time to respond to the new request."

However, Pemex asserted its storage and distribution facilities were still functioning properly, stating that the attack only affected less than 5% of its computers. It is still not clear what type of malicious code was used in this cyber attack.

Many companies have been hacked

One Pemex group leader believes that the malware used is Ryuk, which attacks companies with annual revenues of between $ 500 million and $ 1 billion. However, Pemex's revenue is much lower than this figure.

Meanwhile, DoppelPaymer is a relatively new malware and has been used in a cyberattack against the Chilean Ministry of Agriculture and the town of Edcouch, Texas, USA.

Because the employees were unable to open the email, the company had to contact via WhatsApp messaging app, a source said. On November 12, Pemex reconnected unaffected computers using patch software, as well as wiping out malware on affected computers.

In March, the Norwegian aluminum manufacturer Norsk Hydro was attacked by malware, forcing parts of the giant industry to operate with handwritten documents.

Although Norsk Hydro refused to pay the ransom, the attack cost the company $ 71 million to wipe out the malware from the computer system, of which only $ 3.6 million was covered by insurance.
